Lock up after the Launcher

1. You can try and install the new 2.2 patch from our web site to fix this problem. Please keep in mind that any saved games that you currently have will not be able to be used after applying the patch.

2. There are some joysticks out (Panther XL, Xterminator, Microsoft) that just having them hooked up to your joystick port can lock-up your computer in the initial release of SHOGO and the SHOGO demo. We have fixed this and other problems in the new 2.2 patch that you can get from our website. For now, unplug your joystick from your computer to solve the problem. If unplugging the joystick does not work, you may have to actually disable the joystick port and re-boot your computer.

3. If you are having problems using a USB mouse with Shogo or any other game, the best way to fix this problem is to turn off MOUSE ACCELERATION in your Control Panel. This may solve your problem! If this does not work, unplug your USB mouse and use a regular one, or get the 2.2 patch for the full version of SHOGO.

4. Check your Advanced Options Menu and make sure that you do not have any boxes checked, then try playing the game again. If all else fails, you can try checking all the left-side options to disable everything, then one by one, un-check the options to see if you can find where the problem is. Once you find the problem, keep that item checked and you should be fine.

5. Try running the game in Software mode (under Display on the Shogo Launcher) and see if it runs. If it does, there's probably a driver error with either DirectX or with your video card drivers. If it still locks up, there might be a bigger problem somewhere else. You can find the latest drivers at www.winfiles.com. Once you install the latest drivers for your video card, re-install DX just to be safe. You can find DX here.

Multiplayer Errors and Solutions

Here are the error messages you may receive when trying to connect to multiplayer games, and the solutions to go with them:

Freezes on 'Loading...' screen ('Loading' at bottom of screen)

-You don't have the same .rez mod that the server is using. Get the most recent version of the modification and add it using the SHOGO 'customize' button on the launcher.

ERROR - Unable to Setup the Network Game

-The server could be down. (ping listed at 9999 in Gamespy) Choose a different server and see if that helps.

-Try adding this to the command line under Advanced Options:

+IPDevice 1

If that doesn't work, try: +IPDevice 2

-If you're using Gamespy, I'd also suggest updating the server list (right click on the button marked "GameSpy Network" and then choose "Update") and see if that resolves the problem.

-Try downloading and installing DUN 1.3 first, then try getting the 2.0 version of Winsock from Microsoft and see if that helps!

-You can also try going into your modem properties, connection, port configuration and check the "use FIFO buffers" box. See if that helps!

"Connection Rejected" error window

The Connection Rejected message either means:

-The Server is full. Wait until someone leaves the server and try joining the game again.

-The Client (you) lacks a Custom map currently running on the server. You'll need to get the Custom Level that is running and join the game again.

ERROR - Unable to join because the game server is a different version or a different game

-You tried to join the SHOGO demo server with the retail version of the game. Check Gamespy's command line to insure that the version (retail or demo) of the game you are launching is similar to that of the server.

ERROR - Disconnected from server

The Disconnect from Server message either means:

-The Client lacks a Custom map that the server is loading/playing. You'll need to get the Custom map and load it into the SHOGO directory before joining that server.

-The Server went offline. Choose a different server and try joining a new game.

Game crashes on map switch

The Client's loaded .rez file doesn't match the server's. Verify that you've only got the mod you want to use and set it to load in the SHOGO customize window.

The black 'Shogo' window shows up then closes.

The Client (you) is using the UAMC1 mod to join a server. Remove the mod from the 'Customize' menu on the launcher and try and reconnect again.

Out of Memory/Client Error

Go to the CLIENT.EXE on your CD and start it using the line below.

client.exe -rez d:\data\shogo.rez

(where d: is the CD-ROM drive letter)

If this works, it means that your CLIENT.EXE file in your SHOGO directory is bad and needs to be replaced by the one on the CD.

Enable Retail Code

There was a slight goof with that command in the ReadThis file. Here is the correct command: +Enableretaillevels 1. You want to enter this code in the Command Line that's under Advanced Options on the Shogo Launcher. After you put that line in, checkmark the "Always specify these Command Line parameters" and click OK. You can then find all the levels under Single Player, Custom.

2.2 Patch info

We fixed a bunch of problems with the 2.2 patch. These problems we fixed are all covered in the READTHIS.txt file that's located in the Shogo directory after you unzip the Zip file to the Shogo directory.

Pick the patch up here and your problems should be fixed. You will need to restart the game in Single Player, as the old saves will not work correctly.

2.2 Patch - Can't Move with the Keyboard

Enter the Advanced Options on the Shogo Launcher and checkmark only the Restore Factory Defaults box, then click OK and launch the game. When on the main menu, enter Options, Keyboard and re-map the keys where you want them and run the game.

3dNOW renderer info

Due to lack of hardware support from manufacturers, we were unable to finish the 3DNow patch for Shogo, so we will not be able to release an AMD 3Dnow! patch.

No Sound Effects

Try and delete the Sound.REZ file from the Shogo folder, then explore the Shogo CD, enter the Game folder and copy the Sound.REZ file from there and paste it back to your Shogo folder on your PC. That should solve the "no sounds" problem.

Mousewheel support with a Microsoft Intellimouse

Add this to the AUTOEXEC.CFG file:

rangebind "##mouse" "Wheel" -120.0 -10.0 PrevWeapon 10.0 120.0 NextWeapon

This should bind the 'wheel down' to the 'Previous Weapon' action, and the 'wheel up' to the 'Next Weapon' action.

You can also download and install the 2.2 patch from our website to fix this problem!

Shogo Port information

The default PORT for SHOGO is 27888. If you want to setup a Server, you can specify any port you want as long as you have the SHOGO patch installed.

"Can't Load Level" error message

This is similar to the CSHELL.DLL error message you can get in the game. Delete the Shogo.REZ file from your Shogo folder, then copy and paste the Shogo.REZ file from the Shogo CD (in the Data folder) into your Shogo folder on your PC and that should fix the problem.

CSHELL.DLL error

Enter the Shogo directory and delete the Shogo.REZ file, then run the game again... it'll run off the CD. If Shogo runs fine after that, copy and paste the Shogo.REZ file from the Shogo CD (in the Data folder) into your Shogo folder on your PC and that should fix the problem.

Permedia 2 / Game is really dark

Try tweaking your GAMMA settings. To change the Gamma for Shogo, right-click on your desktop, choose PROPERTIES, and then adjust the GAMMA for your particular video card.

You can also activate the console by pressing the tilde "~" key, and type:

Gamma 100, then press Enter.

One more thing to try is to open your AUTOEXEC.CFG file in the SHOGO directory and look for a command that says:

"Gamma" "1.000000"

Try changing the number from 1.0 to 5.0+ until you find an acceptable gamma setting. Remember, the higher the number you use, the brighter the game will become.

Lastly, try opening up the console and type: SATURATE 1. This should brighten up the game a bit.

G200 video card problems

If you're having problems with the texture colors, try entering the Advanced Option menu and Disable Fog. If that doesn't work, try enabling Pixel Doubling. See if that helps.

Another thing to try is to use the latest drivers for the card or try the new beta drivers and see how that does. You can find them here.

Also, if you ever get a black screen, try enabling LightMapping in the Advanced Options menu and see if that helps.

G400 video card problems

Other than making sure you have the latest drivers for your card (you can find them here), enter the G400 Control Panel and disable busmastering. See if that helps.

S3 chip

Make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card (you can find them at www.s3.com, in the Support area), and you can also try and disable Fog under the Advanced Options menu and see if that helps.

Voodoo 2 SLI problems

If you are having problems running SHOGO with twin Voodoo 2's, try checking the "restore factory defaults" box and launch the game. You could also try disabling one of the cards so that only one card is being used and see if that helps. Another thing to try is disabling the Voodoo2, Direct3d option in the V2 control panel.

"game in 1/4 screen" problem

In the Advanced Options screen, uncheck every option that is checkmarked under Disable and Enable, click OK and then run Shogo again and see if that helps.

Kura Decision "lockup"

When the game "stalls" on the Kura decision part, where you have to choose an option, press Up or Down on the keyboard arrow keys to highlight your answer, then press Enter on the keyboard.

DINPUT.DLL error

Try copying the DINPUT.DLL and DINPUT.VXD files from the Shogo CD and paste them into your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.

STB Velocity 128/TNT/Blue Screen in MEV Depot 17 problem

Go into the SHOGO Advanced Options and check the Disable FOG box and then start the game. That should fix the problem.

C++ error

If you are receiving an error message that says, "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library, runtime library error, abnormal program termination, (directory)", you have a bad CD. Something on the CD disc is corrupted or damaged. Try installing the game on another computer and see what happens. If you still get the error, we'd recommend that you return the game to the store where you bought it and swap it for a new CD. If you don't get the error on the second computer, there would have to be something weird with your computer setup. Make sure that you have at least DirectX6 installed and all the latest drivers installed for your computer and then re-install the game again and try again.

Sound Card crashes

The Creative Labs AWE64 sound card and some similar cards use hardware for the first 32 MIDI voices, and software for 32 more. If you have such a card, and are experiencing any kind of sound problem or crashes (especially if it affects other games as well), go into Control Panel, Multimedia, and select the MIDI tab. If you have "WaveSynth" selected, you have the extra 32 voices turned on, and this can cause tremendous slowdown or crashes on even the most powerful systems. Instead, select "MIDI for Creative Wave Effects Synthesis". If your card is from another manufacturer, you may want to try choosing another MIDI device in the list of devices, or contact their technical support about this issue. You can find their website at www.soundblaster.com.

Also, try selecting a different MIDI music device for playback in CONTROL PANEL, MULTIMEDIA and see if that helps.

Installing the Shogo Demo to a different drive

By default, Windows sets up the temporary directory as "C:\WINDOWS\TEMP" or something similar depending on the name of your Windows directory and the boot drive. To change the default directory need to create or edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, and have a new directory selected on another hard drive.

1) First select which drive you want to use, and create a new TEMP directory on it. For example, you may select D and add a new TEMP directory so you now have "D:\TEMP"

2) Look at the root directory of your boot drive, normally "C:\". If you do not see AUTOEXEC.BAT skip to step 3. If you see AUTOEXEC.BAT, right click on the file and select "OPEN WITH...", then select NOTEPAD, then add the following two lines (or change the SET TEMP and SET TMP lines to the below):

SET TEMP=D:\TEMP

SET TMP=D:\TEMP

Where D is the drive you selected, and TEMP is the directory you created as a new TEMP directory. You may want to create a backup of your existing AUTOEXEC.BAT before making these changes.

3) Start NOTEPAD. Add the following two lines to the blank document:

SET TEMP=D:\TEMP

SET TMP=D:\TEMP

Where D is the drive you selected, and TEMP is the directory you created as a new TEMP directory. Then select SAVE AS... and save the file in the root directory of the boot drive as AUTOEXEC.BAT. Then select SAVE AS... and save the file in the root directory of the boot drive as CONFIG.SYS.

4) Restart the computer.

5) WARNING: This will be the new permanent TEMP directory unless you undo the changes you made to the AUTOEXEC.BAT. This may or may not be a good thing, if you are running consistently low on space on your boot drive, then this may be a good option to keep. Thanks to SHOGO fan, Brian A. Thomas, for this information!

NT4 questions

Shogo will not run correctly on Windows NT. Windows NT only supports up to Direct X3 (DirectX 5 with SP4) and Shogo needs Direct X6 to run properly. The best thing to do is play Shogo under Win95 or Win98 if at all possible, as Shogo was not designed to run in NT.

Tractor Beam questions

The tractor beam is a multiplayer, server side option only with the 2.2 patch. If the server has it on, you'll be able to automatically use the Tractor Beam by pressing the key you assigned that action to! If you press that key and the TB doesn't work, then it's not activated. Only the server can activate the Beam.

Multiple IP address Configuration

You will need to use the IP variable to solve this problem. In your Shogosrv.cfg file, add:

IP 1.2.3.4 (where 1.2.3.4 is the IP address you want to use)

NOTE: This only works in ShogoServ, not when hosting in-game.

Uninstallation information

Go into My Computer ==> Control Panel ==> Add/Remove programs. Once you double click on that icon, scroll down through the list to find Shogo, then double click it to remove Shogo.
